SPAR HOT SUMMER OF TOUCH GETS UNDERWAY

The 2008 SPAR Hot Summer of Touch got underway at picturesque Camps Bay yesterday. Fine weather greeted the 41 teams and the wind stayed away for most of the day allowing participants and spectators the opportunity to enjoy some Exciting Touch on the beach.
The early action saw some interesting results with one or two of the fancied teams being pushed all the way by a host of upcoming teams. This augers well for the rest of the series, which promises to be one of the most open and keenly contested yet. The most promising team of the tournament was the “Maynard Touchies” who got through to the quarter finals.
The semi finals however saw 4 of last years top 5 teams contesting for a place in the final. The reigning champion Itec Nomads took on the Vodacom Galaxy Amazing Warriors in the first Semi. They were upstaged in a spirited performance losing by 2 tries to nil. The second semi final saw the Henties Dwergies beating the Shufflers in extra time by 1 try to nil.
With the unusually high spring tide playing havoc on the field, conditions with a wet ball and in some places ankle deep water, were always going to make the final a tight affair, and once again the result was only decided in extra time with a sudden death try giving the Vodacom Galaxy Amazing Warriors there first ever win on the Hot Summer of Touch. The third and fourth play-off was won by the Shufflers by1 try to nil.
